Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is rare disorder characterized by marked infiltration of eosinophils in the wall of the gastrointestinal tracts. Presentation may vary depending on the specific site of the affected gastrointestinal tract and the specific layer of the affected gastrointestinal wall. The depth of infiltration is the basis for a proposed classification as mucosal, muscular and serosal types. The diagnosis can be confirmed on histopathological demonstration of eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel wall (often > 50 eosinophils per high power field). We experienced a 66-year-old woman that presented with epigastric pain and watery diarrhea for 1 month. There were asthma, chronic maxillary sinusitis and idiopathic pancreatitis in her medical history. On laboratory examination, peripheral blood showed hypereosinophilia. A computed tomography scan revealed wall thickening of gastric antrum. On esophagogastroduodenoscopy, hyperemic patches were noted on the antrum of stomach. Biopsies from the gastric antrum and gastric body showed moderately intensive eosinophilic infiltrations. There was no evidence of parasitic infection based on a serum immunoassay and stool examination. Under the diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, she was treated by steroid with good response.
